Character Name: Franziska von Karma
Character Canon: Ace Attorney
History: http://aceattorney.wikia.com/wiki/Franziska_von_Karma
AU History: Franziska has always known she was destined for great things. After all, her father made a point of telling her that nothing less than perfection was expected from her from birth. The von Karma family have always been extremely affluent and influential in her home land of Caldera, and Franziska was extremely privileged from birth; but she was subjected to an extremely strict routine. She was tutored in law, but also in the sciences, languages, and histories; more importantly, however, she was trained in the art of battling Pokemon. Franziska proved to be exceptionally talented at this, though she was also taught to view her Pokemon as nothing but tools. Still, her strategy and grasp of combat were unparalleled among her peers, and she was deemed a prodigy in battling as well as law. Through this homeschooling by her father and countless tutors, it was made abundantly clear that she was to follow in her father’s footsteps as a great prosecutor.
Her father was undefeated, and has yet to lose a case.
Without any peers to socialize with and constantly pitted against her adopted brother, Franziska has grown into an extremely insecure young woman, desperate to prove herself. This isn’t the face she shows to the world, though; Franziska is tenacious, arrogant, and obsessed with her own attempts at perfection, and she can’t stand the thought of losing in any capacity. She is overshadowed by her father’s reputation just as much as she benefits from it; and so, after passing her bar exam at the age of eighteen, Franziska has moved to a new city—that of Union—to prove that she can make a name for herself.
She is determined to make criminals pay, to prove herself worthy of the von Karma name, and—most importantly—conquer the courtrooms.
Canon Personality:
It is not in the nature of a Von Karma to lose at anything!!
Franziska’s motivations can be summed up in one word, and that is ‘perfection.’ However, as an individual, she is incredibly flawed and troubled. Franziska grew up in an incredibly emotionally abusive home, one where anything less than one hundred percent was simply not considered an option. As such, Franziska has never been able to accept any sort of defeat, and will go to lengths that can be considered questionable to achieve victory (in canon, this often entails tampering with a witness’ testimony or keeping evidence from the defense). These tactics were encouraged by her father, and it is likely that Franziska grew up with the mentality that nothing was too immoral to be committed in the name of preserving the von Karma perfection—even murder.
In canon, Franziska only appears after her father, Manfred von Karma, is convicted of the murder of her adopted brother’s father, Gregory Edgeworth. Franziska was raised with Miles Edgeworth, and grew intensely competitive with the older boy; when she comes to challenge Phoenix Wright in court, she only states that she is seeking ‘revenge.’ While it is reasonable to assume that Franziska was seeking revenge for her father’s conviction and subsequent execution, it is instead revealed that she sought Phoenix out to best her ‘little brother’ once and for all—if she could defeat Phoenix Wright in a court of law, she could do something that Miles Edgeworth can’t, and would finally prove herself better than him. This twisted logic and roundabout way of thinking is characteristic of Franziska’s petulant behavior—even when her father is dead and her adopted brother is missing, she can only think about finally besting her greatest rival.
Franziska appears very mature, looking much older than her eighteen years during her first appearance. However, in reality, her behavior both inside of the courtroom and out is nothing but childish. A prodigy she may be, and an extremely intelligent one at that, but she is arrogant, spoiled, and oftentimes downright cruel. This can be attributed to the manner in which she was raised—Franziska was taught not to show emotion, to only be cold and clinical in her endeavors, and so she does not know how to handle intense emotions other than rage. When she is frustrated or does not get her way, Franziska often resorts to her handy whip, taking out her aggression on the person who caused the negative feelings—most often, a male. Franziska rarely assaults women in the same way, and is much more likely to care about them or engage emotionally, but it is still extremely difficult for her.
Despite everything, Franziska is capable of humanity. She isn’t by nature a cruel person; this is what she has been manufactured into throughout childhood. When she’s finally free of her father’s influence, she is able to express genuine caring in multiple situations. The first instance of this is with Adrian Andrews, a witness in a case that Franziska prosecutes. She helps Adrian to cover up backstory that might reveal her suicide attempt, a move which could have prevented psychological harm to Adrian. While one might cynically think that she did this only to benefit herself, Franziska maintains a relationship with the older woman, teaching her how to be more assertive and use a whip, and in a game years later, it is revealed that the two remained close. Some fans have interpreted this relationship as romantic; but whatever the nature of the relationship, it is proof that Franziska can form a strong, healthy bond with another individual—something incredibly important, given how difficult it is for her to relate to others.
Another highly important relationship to the discussion of Franziska’s personality is that with Miles Edgeworth. As I’ve mentioned, he is Franziska’s adopted brother; Edgeworth is also the first individual that Franziska demonstrates any sort of affection to, though she does her best to remain consistently cold and competitive towards him. After repeatedly losing to Phoenix Wright, the very foundations of Franziska’s worldview are shaken, and it is Miles Edgeworth who helps her to finally come to terms with the fact that her worldview is wrong. Although she can be cruel to Edgeworth, she respects and trusts him on a level that is not seen with any other character in the series; it is clear that he is the most important person in her life, and perhaps she in his.
Franziska also displays a strong sense of justice—a day after being shot in the shoulder, she leaves the hospital for the sole purpose of delivering evidence to court to aid Miles Edgeworth in catching a criminal currently holding one of her adversaries, Maya Fey, hostage. After the main series, Franziska works with Interpol to prosecute criminals and smugglers internationally, and seeks to better herself for her own sake instead of the way her father raised her.
AU Deviation: In this universe, as opposed to being trained specifically in law, Franziska will also have been trained in Pokemon battling and combat. Having been raised in Caldera as opposed to Germany, she associates more with battling Pokemon to show her strength in addition to showing her prowess in a court of law. Franziska also has more steady companions than in the games, having had Pokemon accompanying her throughout her life; however, she was taught to see them as tools as opposed to friends, and so she lacks strong emotional bonds with them. She still uses her whip in situations which cause her anger or other emotional stress, but she also has used carefully directed electric shocks on the part of her Magnemite to attack her opponents.
Canon Abilities: Franziska is a good speaker, brilliant lawyer, and extremely intelligent. She speaks multiple languages and is incredibly good at handling whips and riding crops.
Enlightened Abilities: Enlightened: Mastery of Battle.
Types: Steel/Psychic
The most prominent manifestation of Franziska’s abilities would be her whip. While it is a normal whip in canon, here it is imbued with all of the strength and power of steel, while remaining flexible and—well—whip-like. I’d like to evaluate how her powers will develop as the game progresses.
Starter Pokémon: Starter: Beldum.
Old City: Magnemite.
SAMPLES
1. What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life?
[She looks bored. Impatient. There’s somewhere she has to be, you can see it in her steel blue eyes, the way her legs are crossed. She’s eighteen, but she has the ability to make you feel incredibly small. Insignificant.
It’s plain that she feels as though you’re a waste of her time.]
Any fool knows that Pokemon are tools. We value them for their strength and valor in combat; they value us for protection. People here are strange in that regard—calling Pokemon bonded. They are allies, nothing more. To form such bonds with a Pokemon would be like forming an intimate bond with one’s sword.
[She smirks.]
Or one’s whip.
2. What do you feel your role in Union is?
By role, do you mean to say that I owe something to this city? I owe Union nothing; I am Calderan, as is my father. This is a momentary pit-stop, a chance to prove myself worthy of the von Karma name before I reclaim my place in Caldera. I have no intention of staying, or claiming a role, as you seem to feel I should.
3. What do you seek for humanity’s future?
Tch.
[She rolls her eyes, and it seems so out of place from the woman in front of you. Everything about her—her manner, her outfit, even her voice—is poised to project superiority. Such a childish act is almost jarring.]
I do not care about any future that is not my own. And the only possible future for myself—
[Here, she gestures grandly, one gloved hand stretching out as though she’s presenting a prize.]
—is perfection.
4. To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
I do not have allies. If I did, and they were foolish enough to get lost, I would do everything in my power rescue them simply to berate their tomfoolery.
[She pauses, before adding something casually.]
And then, of course, they’d be indebted to me for saving them. Such a thing could prove useful.
(Note: Franziska is lying somewhat—especially to herself. Here, she parrots her father’s teachings—but were she actually in a situation, she would fight for her allies to the end. If they asked her why she did it, this would be her excuse, or something evasive. She truly believes that this is what she would do; however, when it comes down to it, she would put her life on the line for those she holds dear.)
5.What would you say the most important occupation is within Union?
Law enforcement. Most accurately, prosecutors. Next question, fool, I haven’t got all day.
6.What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man?
[Her eyes flicker, and she grins, slow and calculating.]
From men, I respect obedience and the ability to hold one’s tongue. Were you to ask me what I respect in women or people would be quite different, I suppose. What a shame.
7. What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?
I do not bond with Pokemon. We have been through this, fool!! I ought to whip you for your capacity to so foolishly waste my time!
8. What do you think your Pokémon respect most about you?
I frankly have more important things to worry about. Perhaps my ability to be absolutely perfect, to lead and conquer in a courtroom or on a battlefield, would be it. Perhaps my family name is what inspires the creatures’ loyalty—von Karma has weight to it, you see, and if I have to explain that, you’re more of an idiot than I’d thought.
9. What would you say is your greatest duty, and why?
What an easy question. My biggest duty is to perfection, to the name von Karma. I have a reputation to uphold. My father is absolutely undefeated, the best prosecutor in the world; he taught me everything I know. My duty is to him, and him alone.
[Her eyes burn with pride, fierce and unrestrained, but there’s something else beneath the surface—some kind of malcontent, the kind that she refuses to believe exists. As quickly as it appears, it’s gone.]
10.In your eyes, what is absolutely unforgivable?
[The answer comes easily from her lips, but that doesn’t mean that the question doesn’t knock the air from her lungs, fill her with dread and fear. She does a remarkable job of keeping composure, but her hands grip at her whip and she’s itching to crack it, to use something to vent everything building up inside. She spits the word as though it is poison. Perhaps she thinks speaking it with as much vitriol as possible can excise it from her system entirely.]
Failure.
